Blue Jays-Angels Preview 2008-07-03

Blue Jays-Angels Preview 2008-07-03
On Friday night, Jered Weaver certainly wouldn't mind pitching the same way he did his last time out. This time, however, he'd like the Los Angeles Angels to win.

Weaver will take the ball for the first time since he started a bizarre loss, hoping to beat the Toronto Blue Jays in the start of a three-game set in Anaheim.

Only four teams in the modern era previously had lost a game in which they did not allow a hit. Weaver (7-8, 4.30 ERA) took part in such a rarity during a 1-0 loss to the Dodgers on Saturday, when the right-hander didn't allow a hit through six innings.

The Dodgers' Matt Kemp reached on Weaver's fielding error leading off the fifth, stole second, took third on Jeff Mathis' throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Blake Dewitt.

Jose Arredondo relieved Weaver and didn't allow a hit in two innings, but the game wasn't an official no-hitter because the Dodgers didn't bat in the ninth.

"It is what it is," Weaver told his team's official Web site. "You don't get to see those games very often. It was definitely a weird game, but a loss is a loss. What are you going to do? You have to take them the same way."

The offensive struggles that slowed the AL West-leading Angels (51-34) at Dodger Stadium - where they tallied one total run in three games - seem to have subsided. They scored 12 runs while winning the last two of a three-game series against Oakland earlier this week.

A late lead was again secure in a 7-4 victory Wednesday, as closer Francisco Rodriguez earned his 34th save of the season, tying the all-time record for saves before the All-Star break set by Atlanta's John Smoltz in 2003.

Rodriguez, who has a 1.93 ERA, is only 23 saves shy of tying Bobby Thigpen's single-season record of 57 set in 1990 with the Chicago White Sox.

"I just want to do my job and not worry about records or anything else," said Rodriguez, who's blown three of 11 save opportunities in his career against the Blue Jays. "I just want to stay healthy the rest of the year. Every time they call out to the bullpen, I've been ready to get it done."

The Angels will face a struggling Toronto offense that has scored two or fewer runs in three of its last four games. The Blue Jays (41-45) dropped the last two games of their series in Seattle, going 0-for-5 with men in scoring position in a 4-2 loss on Wednesday.

They were hitless in 14 at-bats with runners on second or third against Atlanta on Sunday, but it didn't matter with A.J. Burnett (8-7, 4.74) on the mound. Burnett allowed four hits, four walks and struck out a season-high 11 in seven innings of a 1-0 victory.

The right-hander has won his last two starts, allowing one run and eight hits in 15 innings over that span while striking out 18. He's also pitched well against the Angels twice this season, allowing nine hits and five runs with 14 strikeouts in 14 innings.

After winning his first two career starts against Toronto, Weaver took a loss on May 30, when he gave up six runs and 10 hits in four innings of a 10-4 defeat.

Still, the Blue Jays have dropped two of three in both of their series against the Angels this season. Toronto also has dropped nine of its last 11 road games overall.
