Blue Jays-Angels Preview 2008-07-06

Blue Jays-Angels Preview 2008-07-06
Jon Garland faltered in his first opportunity at 100 career wins.

The Los Angeles Angels starter will try again to reach the personal milestone on Sunday in the finale of a three-game home series with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Garland (7-5, 3.99 ERA) won 92 games over eight seasons with the Chicago White Sox before he was traded to Los Angeles (52-35) in the offseason.

In his first chance to secure his 100th victory, the right-hander gave up four runs - two earned - and eight hits in six innings of a 6-1 loss to Oakland on Monday. It was only his second loss in 11 outings.

"I felt I had a pretty solid game, kept the boys in it as long as possible," Garland, who is 1-2 with a 4.38 ERA in his last four starts, told the Angels' official Web site. "I gave 'em a chance to win it."

The Angels committed two errors in Garland's last start. Though they have been solid otherwise with only 48 miscues this season, they've tallied eight over their last five contests, including a season high-tying four in a 7-5 loss to Toronto (42-46) on Saturday.

Chone Figgins, who picked up his second error, equaled a season-high with three hits, while Vladimir Guerrero homered and drove in three runs for Los Angeles. The Angels fell to 3-2 on their six-game homestand, but remained five games ahead of Oakland in the AL West.

"You're going to have some rough patches," manager Mike Scioscia told the Angels' site. "Our defense is going to be a positive for us. All in all, we play great defense. (Saturday night) a couple of plays didn't get made that usually are. That's part of the game."

Scioscia is hoping for a better defensive outing behind Garland, who tries for his fifth consecutive win over Toronto.

Garland, who is 10-2 with a 4.23 ERA in 17 lifetime appearances versus the Blue Jays, didn't factor into the decision against them on June 1. He walked a season high-tying four, while giving up three runs in five innings of a 4-3 win.

Toronto slugger Vernon Wells has gone 8-for-34 (.235) with four doubles and two RBIs lifetime against Garland. He hit a two-run homer Saturday, while Alex Rios drove in two runs and stole three bases for the Blue Jays.

"I expect myself to go out and perform each night, and I want to succeed every time I go up to the plate," said Wells, who has hit .282 (29-for-103) with four homers and 15 RBIs in 25 games since returning from the disabled list. "Obviously, it's not going to happen because it's baseball and you're going to fail sometimes."

Toronto is 7-7 since Cito Gaston replaced John Gibbons as manager on June 20, and will give the ball to Jesse Litsch (8-4, 3.69).

After opening 7-1 with a 3.18 ERA in his first 11 outings, Litsch is 1-3 with a 4.58 ERA in his last six. The right-hander yielded an earned run and a season high-tying 10 hits over 5 2-3 innings, but did not factor into the decision of a 7-6 loss at Seattle on Tuesday.

In his only appearance against the Angels, Litsch beat them by giving up three runs over 6 1-3 innings of a 5-4 road win on Aug. 23.
