New Mexico State fires Mumme

New Mexico State fired football coach Hal Mumme. Mumme had a 11-38 record in four years as NMSU's coach, but five of those victories were against teams from the Football Championship Subdivision. Athletic Director McKinley Boston said he has begun a national search for a successor. Head coaching experience won't be required. "I am looking for energy, a fire in the belly, someone with at least experience as a coordinator," Boston said. The Aggies lost seven straight games to end the season 3-9 overall and 1-7 in the Western Athletic Conference. Charley Johnson, an NMSU quarterback who played in the NFL, is the acting coach. ...

Clemson defensive coordinator Vic Koenning resigned, one day after the Tigers officially hired Dabo Swinney as head coach. Koenning said in a statement released by the school that his role with the team was in question so he decided to leave before Clemson's bowl game to have more job options.

Ballesteros has more surgery

Five-time major champion Seve Ballesteros underwent more surgery Tuesday, this time to drain fluid from his brain. Ballesteros, 51, was in stable condition in the intensive care unit of La Paz hospital in Madrid after the operation to implant a valve in his brain. The golf great had an operation Oct. 24 to remove a malignant brain tumor. ...

Adam Scott, the world No. 17-ranked golfer, withdrew from this week's Australian PGA Championship after injuring his knee while body-surfing. Scott, 28, injured his right knee as he waded in the surf at a beach two days ago. {ZONE} SB
