"All of us hitters are pretty insecure, and you watch 'SportsCenter' and see what the guys who are really raking are doing. ... That's a bad rollercoaster to get yourself on," Holliday said.
Holliday said he doesn't feel any extra pressure because he's with a new team or because he and Jason Giambi were supposed to rev up the A's scoring. He said his .267 average and zero homers are partly the result of cool weather and partly because of good pitching.
The main problem, though, is faulty swing mechanics. Holliday knows his swing better than most hitters, and he said he's not getting his hands out far enough; the ball is getting too deep and he's not able to drive it as he should.
RAINOUT FALLOUT: The A's game at Yankee Stadium was postponed with no announced makeup date, but the two options are the off-day before the team's next series here, which would be July 23, or a day-night doubleheader that same series.
Giving up the off-day would require a vote of approval by the A's players, because it would mean they're playing 28 games in a row. Anything more than 20 consecutive games must be OKed by the union, and A's player representative Brad Ziegler was at the Players Association headquarters Monday discussing the situation.
Dana Eveland will start tonight and Brett Anderson on Wednesday, but manager Bob Geren did not know the rotation beyond that. With days off Thursday and Monday, it's likely that Josh Outman 's turn will be skipped.
INJURY UPDATE: The A's hadn't heard any specifics about Joey Devine 's visit to Dr. James Andrews . Devine is hoping to get a diagnosis for his chronic elbow discomfort.
Nomar Garciaparra calf tightness was not scheduled to play Monday and his status for tonight is unclear. Third baseman Eric Chavez said he came out of Sunday's game well and will play.
