Toronto Blue Jays News

On Tuesday, March 24, John Brattain of Springbrook, Ont., Baseball writer, Blue Jays fan, husband and father, passed away. He was 44.

Always a prolific writer, Mr. Brattain wrote for The Hardball Times, Baseball Digest Daily, MSN Sympatico, and his blog, The Groundrule Trouble. He was best known for his fantastic sense of humour and willingness to take on those he considered some of Baseball's greatest villains, including commissioner Bud Selig, former Montreal Expos owner Jeffrey Loria and Florida Marlins president David Samson.

He was a Blue Jays fan, but was perhaps best known for consistently defending the rights of two of Baseball's most infamous players - without apologizing for their alleged drug use. He charged Major League Baseball officials with collusion in their dealing with Barry Bonds, and pointed out that, more important than Alex Rodriguez's steroid use was the fact that the results of the player's supposedly anonymous 2003 drug test were leaked to the press.

Mr. Brattain was also an active member of the Stirling, Ont., congregation of the Jehovah's Witnesses. He leaves his wife Kelly and daughters Belinda and Kataryna.
