Ex-Jay Mench signs deal with Japan's Hanshin

Former Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Mench has signed a one-year, $1.9-million (U.S.) deal with the Hanshin Tigers.

The 30-year-old Mench hit .243 in 51 games for Toronto last season. He has a career batting average of .269 with 89 homers and 330 RBIs in 702 major league games with the Blue Jays, Texas Rangers and Milwaukee Brewers.


Pierce says she's not ready for retirement

Two-time Grand Slam champion Mary Pierce isn't ready to hang up her racket just yet.

Despite being sidelined by a knee injury since 2006, the Frenchwoman told sports daily L'Equipe she would like to play again at the French Open.

"I care about Roland Garros. If I could stand in centre court for one match that would already be a big victory," she said.


Ronaldinho theft victim, Golden Ball left behind

Thieves broke into soccer star Ronaldinho's house and made off with thousands of dollars worth of goods but left behind the AC Milan midfielder's Golden Ball trophy, Italian media reports said Wednesday.

Ronaldinho was in his native Brazil when four thieves stole mainly jewellery and watches early Tuesday morning, Corriere della Sera reported.

Ronaldinho won the Golden Ball award as the best player in Europe in 2005, his first season with Milan.

Defender chooses to play for Serbia instead of U.S.

Defender Neven Subotic has chosen to play soccer for Serbia instead of the United States.

Subotic, who was born in Bosnia and holds an American passport, has played for the U.S. under-17 and under-20 teams. He now plays for Borussia Dortmund in the German league.


Fighting Irish finally end 9-game bowl losing skid

Jimmy Clausen ended Notre Dame's long bowl drought - and Hawaii's bid for a fourth straight Hawaii Bowl victory - with a record-breaking passing night.

Clausen set Notre Dame bowl records with 401 yards passing and five touchdowns to lead the efficient Fighting Irish to their first post-season victory in 15 years, 49-21 over Hawaii on Wednesday.


Rock set to host

holiday camp for kids

The Toronto Rock is staging a three-day lacrosse camp for 9-to 15-year-olds over the holidays.

Hosted by Rock forward Lewis Ratcliff, the camp runs from Monday to Wednesday at the Scarborough Soccer Centre, 9 a.m. to noon each day. Cost is $150 and players are required to wear full equipment. Interested parties can register online at or by calling Cameron Howson at 416-596-3075 (ext. 222).
