Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2008-06-09

Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2008-06-09
The Blue Jays ended their four-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday afternoon.

This one could have been scripted on the chalkboard in the offseason -- if baseball was like football with X's and O's. Ace Roy Halladay pitches deep into the game, working 7 2/3 innings and leaving with a one-run lead.

Lefty Scott Downs gets out the tough left-handed hitter Luke Scott to pop up after Scott had homered twice off Halladay.

Closer B.J. Ryan works a 1-2-3, warm-up-the-bus, save.

Vernon Wells -- in his second game off the disabled list -- hit an important homer.

Wells homered off Matt Albers leading off the sixth. Lyle Overbay, who had walked, was chased home by a Rod Barajas double and Barajas scored the winner on a fly ball by Scutaro.

Those go-go Jays also manufactured a run with two out in the second. Marco Scutaro broke off first to steal and Orioles catcher Ramon Hernandez came up throwing. Brad Wilkerson quickly took off from third and beat the return throw home for a steal of home.

"We're gambling they throw through," said manager John Gibbons. "If they look at third, we're dead."

The O's did not. Future opponents might, as it was the second successful steal of home for the go-go Jays in 2008. Gregg Zaun had the other.

"That's a part of the game we haven't had in the past," said Wells, who returned early from the disabled list (right wrist) Saturday.

BLUE JAYS 5, RAYS 4: A month ago when Roy Halladay gave up four runs, he wound up being stuck with the loss. He allowed eight hits -- including two homers -- four runs and hit two batters, but had enough support to win his eighth game by the slimmest of margins.
