Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2009-04-17

Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2009-04-17
Last year, the Blue Jays couldn't hit a lick.

So far this season, it's as if they can't miss a pitch.

Off to a strong start at 8-3, Toronto has the best offense in the American League. The Jays are atop the majors in virtually every department, as they lead in hits (128), average (.317), runs (77) and home runs (19, tied with Texas).

"We're pitching well and we're hitting the (stuffing) out of the ball, so this start isn't a surprise," third baseman Scott Rolen said before Thursday's game. "Remember, we're still only talking 10 games. If we start 3-7, it's a whole different story. If we go 3-7 in June, it's not that big a deal."

Rolen, who has adopted a different swing this season -- he's lowered his hands to take stress off his chronically injured left shoulder -- is one of the Jays who is off to a fast start, hitting .359.

Second baseman Aaron Hill, who is hitting .380 after having four hits, including a home run, on Wednesday and then going 3-for-5 on Thursday, believes hitting is contagious.

"Momentum is huge in any sport," Hill said. "But we have to keep riding it. We're off to a really good start. Guys were hungry coming into spring training just because the last couple of years, we've never been on the same page. Either pitching's doing good and we're struggling or vice versa. It was great to have the coaching staff come in at spring training and say, 'Hey, swing the bats.' It's worked out great."

BLUE JAYS 9, TWINS 2: RHP Roy Halladay earned the win and kept his unbeaten streak against the Twins alive. He moved to 8-0 vs. Minnesota in nine career starts. The Twins are the lone American League club that has never beaten Halladay. The Jays broke it open with a seven-run seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by Marco Scutaro and a grand slam by Kevin Millar. The Jays won three of the four games in the series and have won 12 of the past 13 against the Twins.
