Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2009-04-20

Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2009-04-20
Ricky Romero has come a long way in a hurry since the final weeks of spring training.

From being out of the running for a spot in the rotation, to being back into contention, to making the team, it's been a rocket ship to the top for the Blue Jays 25-year-old left-hander.

Three games into his first major league season, Romero has pitched himself into the position of being the second-best starter on the staff in back of Roy Halladay.

Facing Oakland on Sunday in the rubber match of the three-game series, all Romero did was blank the A's on four hits over seven innings. He earned his second victory of the season as the Jays logged their first shutout of 2009 with a 1-0 victory.

"He's certainly pitching like a No. 2 starter," manager Cito Gaston said of his rookie who has logged 21 innings in his three starts to tie for the team lead with Halladay. "It's good to see. He's pitched great. From his first start, he's been just a little better every time he goes out there."

In his major league debut April 9 against Detroit, Romero went six innings to pick up the victory, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. He followed that up by going eight innings against the Twins on April 14, a no-decision where he allowed two runs on eight hits.

On Sunday, it was no runs, four hits, two walks and a career high six strikeouts.

Romero, who struggled with his confidence during his minor league career, has shown no signs of being intimidated by big-league hitters.

"It's up there," Romero said of his confidence level now. "This is what you try to build for, you try to get better every time and right now I feel that's what I'm doing."

BLUE JAYS 1, A'S 0: LHP Ricky Romero checked the A's on four hits over seven innings and LHP Scott Downs and LHP B.J. Ryan each threw a scoreless inning to allow the Jays to post their first shutout victory of the season. 1B Lyle Overbay drove in the only run in the second when he singled home Kevin Millar from second. Millar opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch by LHP Dallas Braden.
