Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2009-05-04

Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2009-05-04
Rookie Scott Richmond, 29, who two years ago was pitching for the Edmonton Cracker Cats of the Independent League, on Sunday checked the Orioles on five hits and two earned runs over seven innings to move to 4-0 on the season. In five starts he has logged 30- 13 innings and has a 2.67 ERA.

Nobody saw this coming.

"I'd love to take credit for it but I'm not throwing the ball," Rod Barajas, his catcher, said. "He's made such great strides since spring training. His location, his ability to mix in pitches behind in the count. The mistakes are way day. He's pitching like a major-leaguer."

Richmond has been a godsend for the Jays rotation what with the injuries to Jesse Litsch and Ricky Romero plus the struggles of the recently demoted David Purcey.

"Having Litsch do down, who was basically our No. 2 guy and the struggles that we've had with Purcey... that (Richmond) was our No. 5 starter and right now he's pitching nowhere near like a No. 5 starter," Barajas continued. "He's our No. 2 guy. He goes out there every single game and he gives us an opportunity to win the game and he shuts the (other) team down. We weren't sure if we were going to have a No. 2 guy like that after Litsch went down and the way he's stepped up, the way he's pitched for us, it's something that we desperately needed and we need him to keep going."

BLUE JAYS 4, ORIOLES 3: Rookie RHP Scott Richmond, 29, moved to 4-0 in five starts as he checked the Orioles on two earned runs over seven innings. With the win the Jays earned their first series sweep of the season. They have now won seven of eight series they've played. CF Vernon Wells hit a two-run homer in the first while RF Alex Rios added a solo shot in the fifth to break the 3-3 tie. It was Rios second homer of the season. LHP Scott Downs earned his third save in as many opportunities working a 1-2-3 ninth. Downs pitched in all three games of the series.
