Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2009-05-05
With B.J. Ryan on the disabled list, Scott Downs has taken over the closer role. But Monday night he wasn't available, having pitched in all three games against Baltimore over the weekend. Lefty Jesse Carlson, who has allowed two runs in 14 appearances, wasn't available either, having thrown the last two days.

It left the Jays vulnerable.

"Sometimes when you use your stopper (closer) three days in a row that's going to happen to you," manager Cito Gaston said of not having Downs available. "Hey, it's a long season. He and Jessie weren't available tonight no matter what. I'm not going to hurt any arms to win a ball game when you may win more down the road."

Brandon League tried to nail it down over the final two innings, but with two out and two strikes on Asdrubal Cabrera in the ninth, he gave up an RBI single, the first of three runs he would allow in the inning. It was the second blown save of the season for League. Downs is 3-for-3 in save situations as Ryan's replacement.

The three runs allowed by League and three more by Shawn Camp in the 12th ended a streak of 8 1/3 scoreless innings by the bullpen.

The Jays' bullpen entered the game with an ERA of 2.91, second in the American League.

INDIANS 9, BLUE JAYS 7 (12 innings): Cleveland pulled out a wild victory after the Jays' Brandon League couldn't close out a 4-3 game in the ninth and the Indians' Kerry Wood couldn't nail down a 6-4 lead in the same inning.

League and Wood had two outs and two strikes but couldn't seal the deal. It was the second blown save for League and first for Wood. The Indians won it scoring three runs off Shawn Camp. Jays LF Jose Bautista tied the game 6-6 with a two-run single in the ninth off Wood.
