Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2009-05-08
The Blue Jays have patched together a rotation -- but that can only hold together so long.

"That goes without saying," Jays manager Cito Gaston said after Thursday's loss to the Angels. "We have to get some guys back. The kid tonight (Robert Ray) pitched better than he did the first time for me. By that I mean, he got his breaking ball over better. His changeup was better.

"But we do have to get some guys back in that starting rotation if we're going to continue to play the way we've been playing."

The Blue Jays' current rotation consists of three rookies (Brett Cecil, Scott Richmond and Ray) and a converted reliever (Brian Tallet) behind ace Roy Halladay. Two other starters (Brian Burres and David Purcey) were demoted to the minors after poor performances.

But the Jays have their fingers crossed about getting injured starters Ricky Romero (right oblique muscle strain), Jesse Litsch (right forearm) and Casey Janssen (elbow/forearm) back at some point in the near future.

ANGELS 6, BLUE JAYS 1: Toronto's offense (tops in baseball through the first 30 games) was held in check by Angels RHP Jered Weaver. Weaver went the distance, allowing just three hits. A solo home run by 2B Aaron Hill provided the only scoring for the Jays. Vernon Wells (double) and Adam Lind (single) had the only other hits.
