Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2008-07-19
Right-hander A.J. Burnett and the Blue Jays apparently are stuck with each other.

Even though the non-waiver trade deadline is 13 days away, there has been little to zero interest in the Jays right-hander.

"I don't see A.J. going anywhere," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said before Friday night's 2-1 heartbreak loss to the Rays with Burnett on the hill. "There's never been a lot of talks from other teams."

He was asked if that's surprising.

"No, not really," Ricciardi replied. "We didn't get one call on anybody, to be honest."

Not one call? Hmmm.

Even though Burnett has been injury-free and posted a career-high 10 wins prior to the All-Star break, his contract would seem to be an impediment to serious talks, that and the Jays' insistence they receive at least two ready-for-prime-time prospects. Burnett, who has a 15-team no-trade list, can opt out of his current contract at the end of the season and negotiate as a free agent rather than spend the next two seasons as a Blue Jay earning $12 million each year.

The expectation is that Burnett will say goodbye to the Jays at the end of this season, but until Sept 28 rolls around, he should make another 12 starts before the curtain comes down.

With the loss, Burnett moved to 10-9 on the season.

RAYS 2, BLUE JAYS 1: RHP A.J. Burnett carried a three-hit shutout into the seventh inning but with two out, but then he served up a two-run home run to light-hitting Tampa SS Ben Zobrist. With the loss, Burnett dropped to 10-9. He came into the game having won four of his past five starts. LF Adam Lind had given the Jays a 1-0 lead in the third with his fourth homer of the season.
