Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2008-07-24

Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2008-07-24
The Blue Jays didn't lose a game Wednesday night, but right-hander Jesse Litsch lost his job.

Following the suspension of Wednesday's game due to a severe rain storm, the Blue Jays announced that Litsch was optioned to Class AAA Syracuse, with left-hander David Purcey being recalled to take his place.

Litsch is 8-7 with a 4.46 ERA on the season but has been struggling the past two months. He's gone 1-6 in his past eight starts. So, the move hardly comes as a shock.

"We want him to go back down there and work on some things," manager Cito Gaston said. "You need to go back and get back to where he was before. Here is not where you work on things.

"I like him, he goes hard out there, but we feel he needs to go down and get back to where he started the season and hopefully get back soon."

Last year, Litsch was the rags-to-riches story, the former Tampa Bay bat boy who made a successful jump from Class AA to go 7-9 with a 3.81 ERA in 20 starts.

BLUE JAYS 2, ORIOLES 1 (sixth inning, suspended): With two outs in the top of the sixth inning and the Jays holding a 2-1 lead, the heavens opened and, following a lengthy delay, the umpires suspended the game until this afternoon. The Jays and Orioles were scheduled to play an afternoon game Thursday, but the completion of the suspended game will come first. 3B Scott Rolen had a 1-0 count when the game was suspended because of the storm.
