Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2008-08-30
They say that pitching and defense are the key components for teams that succeed in the postseason.

Just don't try telling that to the Blue Jays.

The Jays lead the American League in pitching with a 3.60 ERA and have the best defense in the league with the fewest errors (65) and the best fielding percentage.

So why are they languishing in fourth place in the AL East, just two games over .500 at 68-66?

The problem for the Jays is their offense, or lack of it.

On Friday, they lost a 2-1 game in the Bronx to the Yankees, their third loss in a row in which they've scored three runs and have been shut out once.

Lack of hitting is what cost manager John Gibbons his job and currently the Jays are in another funk.

Manager Cito Gaston said that if he's back next season, one of his goals will be to grind more consistency out of his lineup.

He firmly believes that with a minor tweak here and there, he has the horses that can do the deed.

Given how they've performed this season, that's a large leap of faith.

YANKEES 2, BLUE JAYS 1: RHP A.J. Burnett was looking for his 17th win of the season but had to settle for a complete game in a losing cause. Burnett, 16-10, allowed just two runs over his eight innings, but with the Jays in a hitting funk, that proved to be one run too many. LF Travis Snider made his major league debut for the Jays and contributed a double -- one of five Toronto hits -- and scored his team's lone run.
