Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2008-09-02

Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2008-09-02
The Blue Jays could use more than a little Earl Weaver baseball -- the old fashioned three-run home run.

But home runs have come grudgingly for the Jays this season.

The next homer the Jays hit will be just their 100th of the season and with 99 they sit 12th in the American League.

Vernon Wells, who missed two months with two different injuries (a fractured left wrist and hamstring problem), leads the club with 15.

With just 26 games remaining in the regular season, the Jays stand a good chance of finishing the year without having a player reach 20 home runs.

The only other years that the Jays went a season without having a player hit 20 home runs was in the strike-shortened 1981 season when 1B John Mayberry topped the team with 17 and 1977, their first season of existence, when 1B/DH/OF Ron Fairly hit 19.
