Toronto Blue Jays Notes, Quotes 2009-04-10
--RF Alex Rios had his bell rung on an odd play in the third inning Thursday when chasing a ball off the bat of Detroit's Marcus Thames. The drive hit off the wall and ricocheted back into the right side of Rios' head. Rios, with one hand held up to his head, retrieved the ball and threw it back to the infield while Thames jogged in with a triple. Rios went down on one knee but after a minute or so collected himself and remained in the game. "After I threw the ball, I was a little dizzy, but it's OK now," Rios said after the game.

--Wednesday's game drew 12,145 fans, the smallest crowd in SkyDome/Rogers Centre history. The previous low was 12,571 on April 30, 2002.

--This season it took the Blue Jays until their second game of the season (Tuesday) to record a walk-off victory on Rod Barajas' sacrifice fly in the ninth inning. Last year, the Blue Jays didn't record a walk-off victory until July 8 vs. Baltimore.

--RHP Scott Richmond, who opens the season as the No. 5 starter in the rotation, is the first Canadian-born starter on the club since Paul Quantrill started the 1996 season in the rotation. Richmond, who is a native of Vancouver, is just the third Canadian-born starter in Blue Jays history, with Denis Boucher (1991) being the other.

--Manager Cito Gaston was thrilled with rookie LHP Ricky Romero's emergence this spring. "He seems like he's improved every time out there," Gaston said.

BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- The most wins recorded by a Blue Jays pitcher on opening day, held by LHP Jimmy Key (1987-89).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I've been (on teams that are) favored and I've been counted out, both ways, and neither one of them really mattered. What matters is when you cross the lines. Let's see what's on the field, let's not see what's on paper." -- 3B Scott Rolen on the prospects for the lightly regarded Blue Jays this season.
