Toronto Blue Jays Notes, Quotes 2009-04-14
--Pitching coach Brad Arnsberg was defensive before Monday's game when questioned about what ails closer B.J. Ryan, who had been ineffective in his first two outings this season. "This whole thing is magnified because you guys have magnified it," Arnsberg said. "In the spring it was his lack of velocity. Now his velocity is 86-88 mph, where he was last year. No one mentions that. Now, he's not throwing strikes. No one hurts more than I do. B.J. has a heart the size of Texas. How come no one asks me about a good Roy Halladay start? Or a good Jesse Litsch start? How come you guys only ask me questions when our pitchers are struggling? All you guys do is come with me with negative questions."

--In Sunday's game against the Indians, manager Cito Gaston asked LF Travis Snider to lay down a sacrifice bunt in the seventh inning. When Snider dropped the bunt down and moved the runners on first and second up a base, it marked the first time that Snider recorded a sacrifice hit in his pro career, a total of 1,375 plate appearances.

--Saturday's victory assured the Jays of a series win in the three-game set against the Tribe. It marked their first series victory in Cleveland since 2003. The Jays didn't get the sweep, though, losing Sunday's finale 8-4.

--DH Adam Lind made history in his first five games of the season. According to Elias Sports Bureau, Lind and Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera became the fifth and sixth players since Major League Baseball compiled runs batted in as an official statistic in 1920 to knock out at least 10 hits, 10 RBIs and three home runs in the first five games of a season. The others were Bobby Doerr (1941), Lou Brock (1967), Kal Daniels (1988) and Larry Walker (1987).

BY THE NUMBERS: 25-47 -- Strikes to pitches that closer B.J. Ryan has thrown this season through two appearances.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'll run him out there again, I'll run him out there as many times as you can." -- Manager Cito Gaston, on how he'll continue to go to struggling LHP B.J. Ryan in save situations.
