Toronto Blue Jays Notes, Quotes 2009-04-24
--When the Jays announce who they'll pick to start Saturday's game in Chicago, it won't come from a list of candidates with stellar performances at Class AAA Las Vegas. Brad Mills and Brett Cecil, the two young lefties who were in the running for a rotation spot during spring training, are off to rough starts. Mills is 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA in three starts, and Cecil is 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in two starts. Veteran LHP Brian Burress, who was claimed off waivers in the offseason, was 7-10 with Baltimore last year. So far at Las Vegas, he's 0-2 with a 6.97 ERA in three appearances, two of them starts.

--RHP Jason Frasor is off a great start. In seven appearances, eight innings, he has allowed just two hits and no runs. He has walked one and struck out six. The opposition has gone 2-for-23 (.087) against him, both hits being singles. His secret to success is a new pitch he developed this spring. He stopped throwing his splitter and developed a hybrid change-splitter grip that tumbles off the table like a splitter. Along the way, his slider also came to life to go along with his 90-95 mph fastball.

--One of LHP Scott Downs' biggest fans is his fellow reliever, LHP B.J. Ryan. "Words can't describe what he brings to this team, and to our bullpen and our whole pitching staff," Ryan said. "He answers the bell every day. He never says no. He pitches an inning, two innings at a time. (Those are) the guys you have to have on your team, guys who go out there and battle and grind, and I don't think he gets the credit he deserves."

BY THE NUMBERS: 10 -- Walks LHP David Purcey issued in his last two starts through April 19.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think they pull for each other. You see them in the dugout, when one does something good, the other one is there. It's not too often you get to play with somebody you came through the minor leagues with. I think it's all a plus." -- Manager Cito Gaston on the bond between DH Adam Lind and rookie LF Travis Snider.
