Toronto Blue Jays Notes, Quotes 2009-05-05
--Through their opening 27 games, the Blue Jays have been judicious in their baserunning. They have stolen just 12 bases with one caught stealing. Last year at this time they had 22 stolen bases -- six by RF Alex Rios, who has two this year -- and had been caught stealing 10 times. Manager Cito Gaston said it's not a case of him putting the brakes on the team or the fact that since they're hitting so well, they don't have to try and manufacture runs. "It's about opportunities and chances that you take," Gaston explained. "We run according to who's on that mound and how fast they are unloading. You also see us trying to steal third sometimes if they (opposing pitcher) get a little lackadaisical." Overall, Gaston said he's a fan of the running game. "A running game creates a lot of trouble for people," he said. "If you can run, you can cause a lot of problems. If you have some speed, it's great."

--RHP Casey Janssen made his second rehab start Saturday at Class A Dunedin, throwing four scoreless, no-hit innings. In two rehab starts, Janssen has tossed seven scoreless innings, allowed one hit, walked two and struck out four. Janssen will now move to Class AA New Hampshire for one or two additional starts before joining the Jays as part of their starting rotation. Janssen is recovering from stiffness in back of his shoulder that surfaced during spring training.

--LHP Scott Downs pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning Sunday for his third save of the season and is 3-for-3 in save situations since taking over for the injured B.J. Ryan. Downs pitched in all three games of the series against the Orioles.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- The number of home runs hit by RF Alex Rios after the opening 27 games. Despite his lack of power production, Rios will continue to hit third in the lineup.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "There will be no change, it's where I want him. Moving him out of that spot is not going to help him. I don't want him to think we're giving up on him. I'm not going to take away from his confidence right now. I'm going to stick with him." -- Manager Cito Gaston, on his plan to keep RF Alex Rios as his No. 3 hitter.
