Toronto Blue Jays Notes, Quotes 2009-05-06
--The Jays entered Tuesday's game with 300 hits, the first team in the major leagues to reach that mark. Toronto entered the day with 38 hits more than the second-best team (St. Louis, 262). It took the Jays 28 games to reach the 300-hit plateau, the fewest games in club history. The previous club mark was set in 1994 and 1999, when it took the Jays 29 games to reach 300 hits.

--Rookie LHP Brett Cecil recorded six strikeouts Tuesday to match a club record by a Blue Jay making his major league debut. In six innings, Cecil allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits, didn't walk a batter but hit three and struck out six. He received a no-decision.

--Through their opening 27 games, the Blue Jays were judicious in their baserunning. They had stolen just 12 bases with one caught stealing. Last year at that point they had 22 stolen bases -- six by RF Alex Rios, who had two this year -- and had been caught stealing 10 times. Manager Cito Gaston said it's not a case of him putting the brakes on the team or the fact that since they're hitting so well, they don't have to try and manufacture runs. "It's about opportunities and chances that you take," Gaston said. "We run according to who's on that mound and how fast they are unloading. You also see us trying to steal third sometimes if they (opposing pitcher) get a little lackadaisical."

Overall, Gaston said he's a fan of the running game. "A running game creates a lot of trouble for people," he said. "If you can run, you can cause a lot of problems. If you have some speed, it's great."

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Home runs hit by RF Alex Rios after the opening 27 games. Despite his lack of power production, Rios will continue to hit third in the lineup.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "There will be no change, it's where I want him. Moving him out of that spot is not going to help him. I don't want him to think we're giving up on him. I'm not going to take away from his confidence right now. I'm going to stick with him." -- Manager Cito Gaston, on his plan to keep RF Alex Rios as his No. 3 hitter.
