Toronto Blue Jays Notes, Quotes 2008-07-19
--With Friday's loss, the Jays have lost 12 of their past 15 road games and dropped to 20-29 on the season.

--RHP Shaun Marcum looked fit and ready to go in his rehab assignment with Class A Dunedin (Fla.) on Thursday. In a game against Vero Beach in which the Blue Jays won 9-0, Marcum didn't allow any hits or walks over four innings while striking out six. "He should be able to pitch Tuesday in Baltimore," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said. Marcum, who was on a 45-pitch maximum for Dunedin, will be limited to around 75 pitches in Baltimore.

--On a historical note, with the start by RHP A.J. Burnett Friday, he became the first starter in club history to start in back-to-back games. Burnett started the Jays' previous game last Sunday versus the Yankees.

--The Jays have no timetable regarding RHP Dustin McGowan, who is on the DL with a tear in his rotator cuff.

"Dr. (Tim) Kremchek is going to re-evaluate him in two weeks," GM J.P. Ricciardi said regarding McGowan. "He wants to see it (his shoulder) calm down before he tests it again." When McGowan went on the DL July 9, it was thought he may be able to come back in four weeks time. And now? "We'll know better in two weeks," Ricciardi said.

--As for 2B Aaron Hill, who has been out with post-concussion syndrome since a collision in a game May 29, there's no improvement. "He's not better, he's not worse," GM J.P. Ricciardi said. "He's very limited as to what he can do, and what he can do ain't much. The longer it goes, the more concerned you get."

It's possible he may not be back this season. "I don't think he's done for the year but we're preparing for a worst-case scenario," Ricciardi said.

BY THE NUMBERS: 250 -- Career home runs hit by Matt Stairs after his homer July 11 against the Yankees. The only other Canadian to have 250 or more major league home runs is Larry Walker, who ended his career with 383.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Our expectations are this team is not as bad as it has played and hopefully will play a little better. Does that mean we're going to be a playoff team? No. Those chances probably aren't good that way, but that doesn't mean we can't hold out hope that we can play better. Maybe that means we have a better second half or a better last two months going into next year." -- General manager J.P. Ricciardi, discussing his club's fortunes.
