Toronto Blue Jays Notes, Quotes 2008-08-26
--OF Kevin Mench was optioned to Class AAA Syracuse, and a move to fill the vacant roster spot will be made before Tuesday's game against the Rays. Mench, 30, has appeared in 42 games this season, posting a .235 average (23-for-98), with 10 doubles, one triple and nine RBIs.

--The Jays are still a little miffed about a call in the fifth in Sunday's game against Boston when, following a double by C Rod Barajas, DH Matt Stairs was thrown out at the plate attempting to score from first. Stairs slid under the tag of Boston C Jason Varitek but home plate ump Angel Campos called him out. Replays, meanwhile, showed that Stairs cleanly slid under the tag and was safe, which would have given the Jays a crucial 6-4 lead. "The problem was the ball beat (Stairs) home," manager Cito Gaston said. "Ninety-five percent of the time, they're going to call them out."

--It's been tough sledding for RHP Roy Halladay this season when facing Tampa Bay. Halladay, who gets the start Tuesday, is 0-3 in three starts vs. the Rays this season. This season, Halladay has allowed 23 hits and 13 earned runs in 22 innings vs. the Rays for a 5.32 ERA.

--C Robinzon Diaz, once considered the Jays' catcher of the future, is now a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. On Monday, the Jays sent Diaz to the Pirates to complete the trade last week for 3B Jose Bautista. Diaz, 24, has appeared in 36 games with Class AAA Syracuse, hitting .244 (32-for-131) with seven doubles, one triple, one home run and 13 RBIs.

--The Jays have shuffled their rotation for the series against the Rays. RHP Jesse Litsch, who has tossed 13 scoreless innings since being recalled from Syracuse, will now start Thursday's game. LHP John Parrish, who was brought up from Syracuse to fill in for the demoted RHP Shaun Marcum, was originally slotted to face the Rays on Thursday. Parrish will now face the Yankees on the weekend.

BY THE NUMBERS: 10 -- Shutouts the Jays had registered through Aug. 24, the most they'd had since they recorded 11 in 2004.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We've got some chance to catch these guys and we want to put the best group out there we can right now." -- General manager J.P. Ricciardi on the moves he's made in the last few days -- the acquisition of 3B Jose Bautista and the demotion of RHP Shaun Marcum to Class AAA Syracuse.
