Toronto Blue Jays Notes, Quotes 2008-08-29
--With the loss, the Jays' record against Tampa Bay fell to 5-11 this season. Dating to June 6, 2007, the Jays have gone 8-18 vs. the Rays. Over the past five meetings, the Jays have been shut out twice and have scored a total of 10 runs.

--LHP David Purcey threw a complete game in Wednesday's 1-0 loss, the first complete game by a Jays left-hander since Ted Lilly racked one up on Aug. 23, 2004. It was also the first complete game by a Jays rookie since RHP David Bush did it on Oct. 1, 2004, vs. the Yankees.

--RHP Shaun Marcum, who was exiled to Class AAA Syracuse after a series of mediocre starts following his return to action after missing a month because of elbow problems, took the loss Wednesday in a game against Rochester. Marcum allowed three runs on five hits in a 4-2 defeat, walked two and struck out nine. Marcum is in line to start the Chiefs' final game of the season Monday against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. After that one, he'll be back with the Jays.

--SS John McDonald tapped home plate with his bat in the fifth inning. On the second tap, the bat snapped in two. At that point, McDonald said he turned to Rays C Shawn Riggans and said, "I worked out today."

--3B Scott Rolen did not play in any of the three games against the Rays but is expected to be in the lineup Friday when the Jays open a three-game series in New York. "I'm just giving him another day to get his legs under him," manager Cito Gaston said of Rolen, who had been on the 15-day DL due to complications with his left shoulder. "He'll have another round of (batting practice). He didn't go out and get into any games (when he was on the DL). To just throw him back in is not fair to him."

BY THE NUMBERS: 10 -- Shutouts the Jays had registered through Aug. 24, the most they'd had since they recorded 11 in 2004.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We've got some chance to catch these guys and we want to put the best group out there we can right now." -- General manager J.P. Ricciardi on the moves he's made in the last few days -- the acquisition of 3B Jose Bautista and the demotion of RHP Shaun Marcum to Class AAA Syracuse.
