Toronto Blue Jays Notes, Quotes 2008-09-24
--The Jays claimed LHP Reid Santos off waivers from the Indians. Santos, 26, split the 2008 season between Class AA Akron and Class AAA Buffalo. Combined, the left-hander made 45 relief appearances, posting a 4-3 record with two saves and a 4.89 ERA. Santos was Cleveland's 13th-round selection in the 2002 draft out of Saddelback Junior College in California. The addition of Santos, who will not be reporting to Toronto, gives the Blue Jays 39 players on their 40-man roster.

--C Rod Barajas, who has a Grade 2 tear of his left hamstring, probably will not play again this season, manager Cito Gaston said. The Jays have five games left in their season, two at home against the Yankees and three on the road in Baltimore.

--LHP David Purcey will not make his final scheduled start of the season Friday in Baltimore. The Jays simply want to protect Purcey, who is 3-6 in 12 starts with the Jays, from a late-season injury. The Jays may be gun shy after RHP Shaun Marcum injured his elbow and will require Tommy John surgery that will wipe out his 2009 season. "We just want to make sure he's around next year," manager Cito Gaston said of Purcey, who logged 65 innings at the major league level.

--With LHP David Purcey out of the mix, the Jays will start RHP Scott Richmond, LHP John Parrish and LHP Jesse Litsch in the final series of the season at Baltimore.

--LHP Scott Downs remains day-to-day with an injury to his right ankle.

BY THE NUMBERS: 6 -- Pitchers on the Jays' current staff who have undergone "Tommy John" surgery -- LHP John Parrish, RHP A.J. Burnett, RHP Dustin McGowan, LHP B.J. Ryan, LHP Brian Tallet and RHP Jason Frasor, who has had the operation twice. RHP Shaun Marcum soon will join the list.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's, in my opinion, a (lousy) way to end the season. The good thing is I'm only 26, I'm not 34, 35 and at the end of my career. Injuries are part of the game and you've got to deal with them." -- RHP Shaun Marcum, on the news that he will require Tommy John surgery to his right elbow and will miss the 2009 season.
