Bluejayshome.com | Toronto Blue Jays News, blue jays Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - The Blue Jays have question marks in the back end of their rotation and are concerned about closer B.J. Ryan's lack of velocity. They have put a heavy burden on their offense to overcome their pitching deficiencies. They look to come out of the gate in April swinging from the heels. A good April is critical.
PLAYER NOTES: ---DH Adam Lind, who bats left-handed, hit fifth while veteran 1B Lyle Overbay, who also hits lefty, batted seventh Monday. Was it a pat on the back for Lind or a slap at Overbay? Turns out it was a little of both. "Lind had a decent spring (.309, one homer, nine RBIs in 68 at-bats) and Overbay struggled a little bit (.174, one, four in 46 at-bats)," manager Cito Gaston said. "And I didn't want to put pressure on him (Overbay). The top four (batters) are set, the next five can go either way. This way it takes a little pressure off him, and we'll see if he can work his way back up. And Lind's certainly qualified to hit there (fifth), too."
--CF Vernon Wells, who appeared in just 11 spring training games due to a hamstring injury, opened the season in center field. Manager Cito Gaston said there's really not much Wells can do to protect against a recurrence. "Vernon wants to play hard," Gaston said. "If he gets hurt, there's nothing we can do about it. He has the green light (to steal) if he wants to go."
--RHP Roy Halladay earned his third opening-day victory, tying Jimmy Key for the franchise record. Halladay, who allowed five runs on six hits over seven innings, is 12-2 in his career against the Tigers.
"I'll take my chances with nine or 12 runs anytime," Halladay said, referring to his run support.

Counted on to be part of the rotation, Janssen suffered a setback in mid-March 2009 when he felt muscle tightness in back of his right shoulder. He is expected to be back with the club in early May.
RHP Dustin McGowan (right shoulder surgery in July 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. Initially, he was expected to be able to contribute by mid-June 2009 at the latest, but it appears that a late-July date is a best-case scenario.
RHP Shawn Marcum (Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. Initially, the Blue Jays didn't expect him back until 2010. Now they say he could be back by August.
