Bluejayshome.com | Toronto Blue Jays News, blue jays Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Through spring training and the opening week of the season, alarm bells were ringing loudly over the performance of veteran closer B.J. Ryan. In Sunday's 1-0 victory over Oakland, Ryan turned in his second solid performance and is now 2-for-3 in save situations. Ryan faced four batters Sunday, allowing one hit while striking out one -- Jack Cust for the second out. His velocity is in the 87-89 mph. range and more importantly he is back throwing strikes. On Sunday, Ryan threw 16 pitches, 13 for strikes.
PLAYER NEWS: --RF Alex Rios has yet to join the Blue Jays' hitting party this season. Rios went 2-for-13 in the three games against Oakland, his first hit snapping an 0-for-15 skid. Rios went 1-for-5 with an RBI Tuesday, but on the season he is hitting .206 and has yet to record a home run. "He's not getting his hands going early enough, and he's behind and he's taking a lot of fastballs that he shouldn't be taking," manager Cito Gaston said. "He's down in the cage working and trying to get to where he should be. We can't do this without him. He has to be a big part of it, too."
--SS John McDonald has yet to start a game and has appeared in just seven games overall, making three plate appearances. Last year, McDonald would come off the bench in the late innings of close games as a defensive replacement, but that hasn't happened this season. It's more a vote of confidence in SS Marco Scutaro's abilities, manager Cito Gaston said. "Scutaro is a great shortstop, too, so there's no need to do that," Gaston said. "You've seen him (Scutaro) make all the plays here, and he's got good range. He's my kind of guy."
--2B Aaron Hill hit his club-leading fifth homer of the season in the fifth inning. The five homers match his career best for any month. Hill, who is on a six-game hit streak, has registered a hit in 14 of the Jays' 15 games.
MEDICAL WATCH:
C Michael Barrett (torn right shoulder muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 18.
RHP Jesse Litsch (strained right forearm) went on the 15-day disabled list April 14. He is expected to miss six to eight weeks.
RHP Casey Janssen (right labrum surgery in March 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He missed all of last season. Counted on to be part of the rotation, Janssen suffered a setback in mid-March 2009 when he felt muscle tightness in back of his right shoulder. He is expected to be back with the club in early May.
RHP Dustin McGowan (right shoulder surgery in July 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. Initially, he was expected to be able to contribute by mid-June 2009 at the latest, but it appears that a late-July date is a best-case scenario.
RHP Shawn Marcum (Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. Initially, the Blue Jays didn't expect him back until 2010. Now they say he could be back by August.
