Toronto Blue Jays Roster Report 2009-04-25

Toronto Blue Jays Roster Report 2009-04-25
Through spring training and the opening weeks of the season, alarm bells were ringing loudly over the performance of veteran closer B.J. Ryan. He blew two of his first four save chances, then landed on the disabled list due to tightness near his pitching shoulder.

PLAYER NEWS:

--With his single in the second inning Friday, SS Marco Scutaro snapped an 0-for-11 skid. On the Jays' just completed six-game homestand, Scutaro was just 3-for-23.

--Filing into the rotation to replace injured LHP Ricky Romero, who was placed on the DL due to a strained oblique, is LHP Brian Burress, who was recalled from Class AAA Las Vegas. Burress, 28, is 0-2 this season with a 6.97 ERA in three games, two starts. In his most recent start on April 19, he allowed two earned runs over six innings against Colorado Springs. Burress is scheduled to make the start on Saturday in Chicago.

--General manager J.P. Ricciardi said that some of his injured pitchers are progressing well on their rehab. Ricciardi said RHP Casey Janssen (right shoulder) and RHP Jesse Litsch (right forearm) will make rehab starts Monday in Dunedin. RHP Shaun Marcum (right elbow) is expected to throw in the bullpen next week in Kansas City. Ricciardi added that if all goes well, LHP Ricky Romero (oblique muscle), Janssen and Litsch should all be ready to return by mid-May.

MEDICAL WATCH:

LHP B.J. Ryan (left trapezius tightness) went on the 15-day disabled list April 23. He will need a rehab assignment before returning to the Blue Jays.

LHP Ricky Romero (strained right oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 20.

C Michael Barrett (torn right shoulder muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 18.

RHP Jesse Litsch (strained right forearm) went on the 15-day disabled list April 14. He is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

RHP Casey Janssen (right labrum surgery in March 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He missed all of last season. Counted on to be part of the rotation, Janssen suffered a setback in mid-March 2009 when he felt muscle tightness in back of his right shoulder. He is expected to be back with the club in early May.

RHP Dustin McGowan (right shoulder surgery in July 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. Initially, he was expected to be able to contribute by mid-June 2009 at the latest, but it appears that a late-July date is a best-case scenario.

RHP Shawn Marcum (Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. Initially, the Blue Jays didn't expect him back until 2010. Now they say he could be back by August.
