Bluejayshome.com | Toronto Blue Jays News, blue jays Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --RHP B.J. Ryan was back with the Blue Jays Friday night. His job was unspecified, but it won't be as the closer, that duty now being carried by Scott Downs. "He'll fit in somewhere out there," manager Cito Gaston said of Ryan, who prior to being placed on the disabled list April 23 had gone 1-0 with an 11.12 ERA in six appearances and was 2-for-4 in save situations. "I'll use him when I need him." Friday it was the ninth inning and Ryan, after walking the leadoff hitter, retired the side on two strikeouts and a fly out. For his part, Ryan said he's fine with the shuffle. "You lose your role by not pitching good, that's what it boils down to," Ryan said. "I didn't pitch well."
--DH Adam Lind has been the Jays' designated hitter in 34 games with two starts in left field. Next weekend, the Jays have three games in Atlanta and with no DH manager Cito Gaston said Lind could be in left for every game, which would put LF Travis Snider, who also bats left, on the bench. "He's going to be my left fielder, maybe against left-handers too. We'll see," Gaston said of Lind, who is hitting .326 with six home runs and a team-leading 31 RBI. Snider is hitting .253 with three homers and 12 RBI. --3B Scott Rolen went 2-for-4 Friday to increase his hit streak to six games. Over that time, Rolen has gone 10-for-23 (.435). Over his last 10 games, Rolen is batting .385 (15-for-39) with six RBI.
--2B Aaron Hill hit his club-leading 10th homer of the season in the third inning Friday. In 2007 when he hit a career-high 17 homers, Hill didn't hit his 10th homer until July 14th. This year he's hit 10 in 38 games.
MEDICAL WATCH:
RHP Casey Janssen (right labrum surgery in March 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He missed all of last season. He began a minor league rehab assignment April 27, and he could be back with the Blue Jays around May 22.
LHP Ricky Romero (strained right oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 20. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Dunedin on May 8, pitched for Class AA New Hampshire on May 13 and then was optioned to Class AAA Las Vegas on May 15 to keep pitching in the minors for now.
LHP B.J. Ryan (left trapezius tightness) went on the 15-day disabled list April 23. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Dunedin on May 7, and he could return to the Blue Jays in mid-May.
C Michael Barrett (torn right shoulder muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 18.
RHP Jesse Litsch (strained right forearm) went on the 15-day disabled list April 14. He experienced discomfort while throwing on April 25, pushing his possible return into June.
RHP Dustin McGowan (right shoulder surgery in July 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. Initially, he was expected to be able to contribute by mid-June 2009 at the latest, but it appears that a late-July date is a best-case scenario.
RHP Shawn Marcum (Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He might be able to return in August.
